Pete's Photo Tips II

Alright the tip today is how to capture motion blur. There are a few steps involved in getting it done well. Doing a shot like this works best if you have your camera on manual so you can control the shutter speed and f-stop. First off choose a subject that will be moving, car, bike, train or some one running. Now stand comfortably, legs apart, hold your camera steady and pick the point that you will be taking the shot. From the point you will be shooting set up your exposure, I recommend between 1/8 to 1/10 th of a second with a 50 mm lens. Now here is the tricky part, pivot with your hip and track your subject as it moves and take the shot at the point you exposed for. The smoother you are with tracking the better your shot will be. Practice this method and play with different shutter speeds, you will find that you can get some incredible looking action shots.

We're not in the festival this year, but I took some time out on this rainy Saturday afternoon to go and check out some of the work exhibited (actually I got invited out by a good friend, because I'm a procrastinator about seeing exhibits!).

So after a full afternoon of gallery hopping, here are my favourites so far & in no particular order:

• Recurrent Memories, Historic Jewish sites in Canada & Poland - Gallery 345 (a MUST see, it gave me goosebumps), 345 Sorauren Ave.
• From the Epic to the Everyday (Particularly the works by Alessandra Sangwinetti, Adi Nes & Bert Teunissen...I somehow managed to MISS the Nan Goldin works) - MOCCA, 952 Queen St West

I saw several others, but they didn't grab me the way these ones did. Do yourself a favour and head out. The festival takes part throughout the month of May in Toronto.

Pete's Photo Tips

Something new for all who follow our blog. I am going to start posting a new tip every two weeks to help everyone out there wanting to take better photos. Ok first tip, introduce yourself to your camera. Not just in the hi how are you sense, learn how to use the features that are built in and get familiar with those functions. As bad as this sounds, READ THE MANUAL! This goes for point and shoot cameras as well as SLR and DSLR cameras. After all when it comes to taking good photo's the camera's brain can only do so much it's your brain that has to make the image work.

A big year already

Well, today's February 29th, yes...the leap day. Won't have another one of those for another 4 years.

Recently we had a lunar eclipse. The last one until 2010 (or some such date).
